Lesson Thirteen: Feng Shui and Annual Flying Stars

This course is about a core and mysterious area in Feng Shui—Nine Palace Flying Stars. It not only integrates the influence of celestial movements on Earth’s magnetic field but also embodies the ancient wisdom and profound insights into natural laws. It has a profound impact on our living environment, career development, health, and fortune.

I. Origin and Composition of Nine Palace Flying Stars

The theoretical foundation of Nine Palace Flying Stars is rooted in the Luo Shu, an ancient mystical pattern that contains the laws of the universe’s creation and change. The Nine Palace Chart incorporates the numbers from the Luo Shu into the palaces and combines them with the numbers of the Later Heaven Bagua, forming the Nine Palace Chart we use today, also known as the New Year’s Day Chart. The New Year’s Day Chart has 9 numbers, each representing a different type of star. Through long-term observation of celestial movements, the ancients found that the movement of the nine stars affects the Earth’s energy and magnetic fields, which in turn is associated with the rise and fall of human society.

II. Three Cycles and Nine Periods with the Flow of Flying Stars

The Three Cycles and Nine Periods is an ancient method of recording time, combined with the stem-branch calendar, used in Feng Shui. The ancients divided 180 years into one major cycle, which is further divided into the Upper, Middle, and Lower Cycles, each lasting 60 years, and then subdivided into three periods, each lasting 20 years. This method of time division reflects the periodic changes in cosmic energy and information as they run their course. In different cycles and periods, the auspicious and inauspicious attributes of the nine stars change. When in command, it is an auspicious star; when out of command, it is an inauspicious star. For example, when it runs to the period corresponding to one of the numbers from 1 to 9, the star represented by that number is the star in command, and its direction will be prosperous, bringing good fortune; while the other stars are out of command and may bring adverse effects.

IV. Calculation and Application of the Flying Stars Chart

(1) Method for Calculating the Central Palace Number
– 1990 – 1999 : Subtract the sum of the last two digits of the year from 10. For example, in 1998, 9 + 8 = 17, 1 + 7 = 8, 10 – 8 = 2, so the central palace number for 1998 is 2.
– After 2000 : Subtract the sum of the last two digits of the year from 9. For example, in 2019, 1 + 9 = 10, 1 + 0 = 1, 9 – 1 = 8, so the central palace number for 2019 is 8.

(2) Order of Flying Stars
The order of flying stars is: Central Palace → Front Palace → Opposite Palace → Next Palace → Li Palace → Kan Palace → Kun Palace → Main Palace → Xun Palace. Arrange the star chart according to the central palace number in this order. For example, if the central palace number is 5, then the front palace number is 6, the opposite palace number is 7, and so on.
